Thoughts on Tallow Skincare Products

Over the past few months, I have been sampling natural skincare products for movingwithgracefl.com because I want to try everything myself before putting it on my site.

I had no idea what tallow was when I started this journey, but tallow products seem to be everywhere. So, naturally, I had to try them.

I started with tallow soap and tallow moisturizer, both from Amish vendors. My experience with the two has been very different.

Moisturizer

Let's start with a product I love and that is currently available on movingwithgracefl.com.

This moisturizer is handmade from 100% grass-fed tallow by the Amish in Ohio. It feels a little greasy when you first put it on, but a little goes a long way and soaks right in.

I wish this product had been available to me when I was skiing because I think it's a must-have for winter outdoor sports enthusiasts as well as anyone whose skin takes a beating from cold, dry weather.

This one definitely made the cut.

Soap

As for tallow soap, which also seems to be everywhere, I am still on the fence.

I have tried two tallow soaps so far, but neither has made the cut for movingwithgracefl.com.

The first came from an Amish vendor on TikTok. I actually loved the way the soap lathered, how moisturized my skin felt afterward, and especially how it helped with the flakiness on my legs.

There was just one problem.

When I took the dry soap out of the package, it smelled like roast beef.

Once the soap was wet, the smell disappeared. I used it on my face and everywhere else, and my skin smelled and felt clean afterward. I really liked the soap itself.

But I decided not to offer it on movingwithgracefl.com because I was concerned customers might find the scent of the dry bar off-putting, even though the soap performs beautifully.

The second tallow soap I tried was also made by the Amish, this time in Ohio. I visited their physical store and asked the saleswoman about the roast beef smell I had experienced with the other product. She told me that properly rendered tallow soap should not have that smell.

Their tallow soaps were all scented, and I found the fragrance to be strong. The soaps are clearly high quality, but the scent stayed with me long after my shower. Since my personal preference is for unscented or lightly scented products, I passed on this one too.

Where This Leaves Me

For now, I have a wonderful tallow moisturizer available on movingwithgracefl.com, with another moisturizer coming soon that combines tallow and goat's milk.

Over the next few weeks, I plan to sample more tallow soaps, and I am also considering adding a tallow lip balm.

That's part of what Moving With Grace is about. I don't want to add a product simply because it's popular or trending. I want to try it first and decide whether it's something I would feel good about recommending to someone else.

So the tallow experiment continues.

Please check back more products are coming soon.
